In The Beginning Was The Orthopedic Dental Exam

An exam by any other name…Is not an exam.

A typical dental exam checks your teeth for cavities and your gums for disease and stops there. It doesn’t include examining your jaw joints and their impact on your dental health and your overall health. This more comprehensive dental exam is important in “orthopedic dentistry,” which ensures your jaw joints are balanced.

An “orthopedic dentistry” exam notes the teeth position and function of your teeth and their supporting structures; an analysis of how your teeth fit together when you bite down; an examination of your chewing and speech — and the movement of your jaws and joints and how they impact all of the above.

Taking the exam even further, the experience of the practitioner determines how much he/she is able to detect. Usually, a dentist doesn’t see much beyond what he or she can treat. At Artistic Dentistry, we treat nearly any dental situation — from root canals to orthodontics to cosmetics to identifying the “mysterious” reason for a tooth problem. In short, the scope of responsibility your practitioner is willing to take depends upon his/her knowledge.

Your teeth and mouth tell a story. Your mouth, gums and jaws indicate much about your overall health. Aside from your dental condition — I can sometimes detect conditions like osteoporosis, leukemia, cancer and even bulimia.

A young woman came to me with tonsils that had been swollen for fifteen years. She had regular dental care while growing up and five years of orthodontics. Neither her dentist or her orthodontist had suggested she see a specialist about the swollen tonsils. I queried her about a list of symptoms I suspected she was suffering from, including chronic fatigue. Wide-eyed, she sat up in my chair and asked “how do you know all this about me?” I immediately referred her to a surgeon who diagnosed that her condition as life-threatening.

A man came to me after spending $50,000 on cosmetic dental treatment. The doctor overseeing the case only performed cosmetic procedures and had referred him to several specialists to perform various phases, such as root canals, extractions, etc. After two years of treatment and expense, the patient still had lower crooked teeth. Why? The specialist overseeing his case didn’t perform orthodontics and told this patient he didn’t need it. After spending $50,000 to rehab your mouth, wouldn’t you want straight teeth? In our office, the steps of his treatment program would have been put in a sequential order that would have included orthodontics at the correct stage.

A dentist with multi-disciplinary skills sees beyond a limited set of procedures. So, the next time my staff in St Louis calls to get you scheduled for your cleaning and exam, you should know that this is one of the most important visits to the dentist you can make. If you value the health of your mouth and plan to keep your teeth for a lifetime, then we’re both on the same page.

Is Your Diet Soda Making You Sick?

In November, it was announced that aspartame would be rebranded as “AminoSweet,” and marketed under its new name. Does this repackaging have anything to do with the studies showing the carcinogenic effects of aspartame? You decide.

The following excerpted letter appeared in the Huffington Post February 12th. The author is Samuel S. Epstein, M.D, Professor Emeritus at Chicago School of Public Health; Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition; and author of over 20 scientific articles and 15 books on cancer, including The Politics of Cancer.

Aspartame, first discovered in 1965 by the pharmaceutical company G.D. Searle, is an artificial sweetener commonly known as Nutrasweet, Equal and Canderel.

In January 1976, then Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Schmidt testified before Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Mass) that Hazleton Laboratories, under contract to Searle, had been charged with falsifying toxicological data on the sweetener.

The FDA subsequently convened a Public Board of Inquiry to review concerns on aspartame’s carcinogenic effects in experimental animals. In 1980, the Board concluded that aspartame could “contribute to the development of brain tumors.”The FDA then recommended that, pending confirmation of these findings, this sweetener should no longer be used.

In 2006, based on highly sensitive and lifelong feeding tests in groups of about 200 rats at doses less than usual human dietary levels, the prestigious Italian Ramazzini Foundation confirmed that aspartame is unequivocally carcinogenic. A high incidence of cancers was induced in multiple organs, including lymph glands, brain and kidney.

Not surprisingly, these findings have been sharply challenged by the sweetener industry, major sweetener users, such as Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestlé and critics like Donald Rumsfeld, former U.S. Defense Secretary, former CEO of Searle.

Want to steer clear of aspartame? Know how to look for it. NutraSweet and Equal are popular brands of sweeteners containing Aspartame , but Aspartame is found in thousands of products — sodas, chewing gum, dairy products and even many medicines. Some familiar ones include: Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, Diet Snapple, Sugar Free Kool-Aid, Breyers Light, General Foods Sugar-Free International Coffees, among other foods.

Side Effects of Aspartame (a partial list)

Anxiety attacks, Arthritis, Asthma, Asthmatic Reactions, Bloating, Edema (Fluid Retention), Blood Sugar Control Problems, (Hypoglycemia or Hyperglycemia), Brain Cancer (Pre-approval studies in animals), Breathing difficulties, Burning eyes or throat, Burning Urination, Can’t think straight Chest Pains, Chronic cough, Chronic Fatigue, Confusion, Depression, Diarrhea, Dizziness, Excessive Thirst or Hunger, Fatigue, Feel unreal, Flushing of face, Headaches/Migraines dizziness, Heart palpitations, Hives, Hypertension, Impotency and Sexual Problems, Inability to concentrate, Insomnia, Irritability, Itching, Joint Pains, Laryngitis, ”like thinking in a fog”, Memory loss, Menstrual Problems or Changes, Muscle spasms, Nausea or Vomiting, Numbness or Tingling of Extremities, Panic Attacks, Rapid Heart Beat, Rashes, Slurring of Speech, Swallowing Pain, Tinnitus, Vertigo, Vision Loss, Weight Gain.

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause of disease.”

— Thomas A. Edison

What is Orthopedic Cosmetic Dentistry?

This is not a recognized specialty in dentistry. Rather, it’s a term we use in
our office to describe the Pagano Protocol – the sequence in which your
teeth, gums and structure are treated which results in a dazzling smile that
sits in a structurally sound foundation.
What do we mean by “orthopedic cosmetic dentistry?” Think of your teeth
and gums as the inside of a house and your jaw and head bones as the
structure and foundation. Once Doc ensures that the structure is balanced
and stable – which often includes treatment that eliminates headaches,
teeth grinding and other unwanted conditions – then the restorative and
cosmetic treatments on your teeth and gums can be performed on a stable
foundation. This results in cosmetic treatment that lasts, a bite that feels
natural, and eliminates redoing your work.
One patient with lifelong headaches experienced complete relief. Her
treatment included straightening her teeth and getting a gorgeous
smile. You can read more in Doc’s free downloadable ebook: Lifetime Smile
at www.stlouisdentistdrpete.com.

Is Your Dentist Keeping Secrets From You?

I don’t think so. But I did like much of the information contained in an article of this title from Dr. Mercola’s website. Here’s a few followed by my comments:

Secret #1: Your dentist may not have the latest technology.

Digital x-ray: Dentists who do not have digital x-ray equipment are practicing in
the dark ages. Digital x-rays use less radiation than film. They are easier to read
and make diagnosis more accurate.

Ultrasonic Cleaning: Ultrasonic instruments vibrate plaque and calculus off your
teeth, even in areas below your gums. It is much more comfortable than oldfashioned
hand scraping.

Doc comment: I agree. Thats’ why our office has had this technology for years.

Secret #2: Your dentist may be using mercury.
Mercury is toxic. Norway and Sweden have banned the use of mercury fillings..
But mercury fillings are less expensive and easier for the dentist to use. If your
dentist does not use composite fillings, don’t go to that dentist any more. In the
US, the FDA is way behind the ball and not actively warning patients about this
like they have been mandated by the courts to do.

Doc’s comment: Very accurate. I haven’t used mercury in my office for years.

Secret #3: The lab may be more important than your dentist.

Dental labs create dentures, crowns, bridges, orthodontic appliances, and other
dental restorations like implant crowns. There is a huge difference in the quality
of these labs. You should be particularly wary if your dentist is using a lab in
China or Mexico. Some of the top labs in the U.S. are Aurum Ceramics,
MicroDental Laboratories, da Vinci Dental Studio, and Williams Dental Lab.

Doc’s comment: True. Aurum Ceramics is one of the labs we use a Artistic Dentistry.

Secret #4: There’s more to good dentistry than filling cavities.

A competent dentist screens for more than tooth decay. He or she should be
concerned about sleep apnea, jaw-related pain known as TMJ, oral cancer,
diabetes and hypertension.

Doc’s comment: All good points. I cover some of this in my free downloadable
electronic ebook found at http://stlouisdentistdrpete.com

Make sure you get your treatment done in the right order

Have you ever gone to the dentist and walked out with a laundry list of treatment you need to have done?

Ever wondered if there’s a proper sequence to the treatment?

If you hired a contractor to build your house, you already know that you wouldn’t put up the walls before wiring the house.

You know it’s just not the right sequence.

Same is true for dentistry. The problem is, most people don’t know there’s actually a proper sequence to performing treatment. If the sequence of treatment is scrambled a new problem is often created, requiring a costly solution. Don’t ever assume that all dental treatment is created equal. It’s NOT! First of all the approach to treatment can be very different, depending on the training of the diagnosing Doc to see and address problems with an understanding of their impact on your overall condition. Secondly, he may not even be aware that a problem exists. Thirdly, he may see the problem and not know what to do about it or where to send you to get the treatment needed.

If you get a treatment program from your dentist, ask him or her to explain the rationale behind the sequence of the proposed treatment. If something doesn’t make sense to you, query it. You need to understand your treatment, WHY it is necessary and WHAT benefits you can expect to get from it
