Celebrities. Glamour. Gorgeous Smiles. They all go together.
Most cosmetic dentists have photos of gorgeous women and handsome men flashing million dollar smiles and having fun.
It all convey the idea that cosmetic dentists are in the glamour business.
And maybe, to an extent, we are.
But, here’s the really unglamorous truth about what your dentist needs to be doing for you. And this is more important than all the fancy equipment or latest technology. Because…If this one fundamental, very boring truth about what your dentist is really doing for you is overlooked, you’ll be miserable with your new smile.
Our primary role as dentists is to provide you with proper CHEWING.
There. I said it. Pretty boring, isn’t it?
In actual fact, making sure you have proper chewing is like engineering on a much tinier scale. In your mouth, a millimeter can make a difference. And when you start adding crowns, veneers, implants, straightening teeth or even just replacing mercury fillings with white fillings, your dentist has to get your bite absolutely perfect so your chewing feels natural.
And that’s where I see most cosmetic work failing. When patients come to me after getting veneers or crowns somewhere else and are frustrated with a bite that doesn’t feel right, I usually find that cosmetic appearances were given more importance than giving a natural bite.
With a bite that’s not right, your chewing won’t feel natural. And not only is that uncomfortable, it can lead to health problems.
We dentists love our gadgets, gizmos and technology. They’re no substitute, however, for skill.
